Background

Volunteer community leadership development programs exist in more than 400 cities in the U.S. As communities have grown, they have recognized the need to sustain community leadership with new people who have a commitment to their community, have pride in its achievements, and a willingness to give their time and talents to meet the challenges of the future.

Initiation of the Leadership Lawton-Fort Sill Program (LLFS) was recommended by the Board of Directors of the Lawton Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A LLFS board was formed with community leaders to oversee the plan by developing and directing the program.

What Is Leadership Lawton-Fort Sill?

Leadership Lawton-Fort Sill is designed to develop talents and broaden perspectives of present and future community leaders. Each year a class of about 20 participants from divers ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds is exposed to issues and organizations affecting life in Lawton, Comanche County, and the State. The participate in a series of activities designed to enhance their leadership potential.

The classroom is the community. The instructors are key community leaders, city and county officials, and professional experts who discuss the important issues of the day. As a result of these discussions, participants gain a familiarity with programs and resources within the area. In addition, they develop a network of important relationships that can be drawn upon as they continue to serve and improve the quality of life in the area. Subjects may include:

  • Economic Development

  • Fort Sill/National Defense

  • Arts

  • Criminal Justice

  • Quality of Life

  • Municipal, County, State, & National Government

  • Media

  • Health Services

  • Environment

  • Education

  • Human Services

The program schedule begins with an orientation to familiarize the participants on course structure. Subsequently, the class will spend one day a month for the next eleven months studying specific aspects of the community. The class year ends with a graduation program.

Organizational Structure

Leadership Lawton-Fort Sill is designed to encourage and stimulate leadership commitment in all areas of public life in Lawton and the surrounding areas. The LLFS Board oversees the day-to-day operations.
